Discard ice that smells or tastes chemical-like until you identify the source. A detergent-like odor does not prove that dishwasher detergent has entered the refrigerator's water supply. Start by finding out whether the smell is limited to the ice and freezer or is also present in the refrigerator's dispensed water.

If only the ice smells, freezer odors, old ice, the storage bin, or ice-maker components are the most practical places to investigate first. If both ice and water smell chemical- or detergent-like, stop using both and treat it as a possible water-path, appliance, or plumbing concern rather than a routine cleaning problem.

Start With a Quick Ice-Only vs. Water Check

Throw out the affected ice rather than trying to mask its smell in drinks.

Then separate the problem into one of two paths:

  • Ice smells, but dispensed water does not: Focus first on the freezer environment, stored ice, bin or tray, and the ice maker's approved cleaning procedure.
  • Ice and dispensed water both smell chemical-like: Stop using the ice and water while you seek model support, appliance service, plumbing help, or guidance from the local water provider.
  • No dispenser? Freeze tap water in a clean, separate ice tray outside the ice maker and compare it with the machine-made ice. This can be a useful troubleshooting clue: if both samples have the same off taste or odor, the issue may not be confined to the ice maker. It is not a contamination test and cannot identify detergent or another chemical.

A dishwasher installed nearby is not automatically the cause. Timing alone---such as noticing an odor after a dishwasher installation or repair---does not show that detergent has reached the refrigerator water line.

When the Odor Is Limited to Ice, Check the Freezer First

Ice can absorb tastes and odors from strong-smelling, uncovered food in the refrigerator or freezer. Old ice can also become stale-tasting. If the freezer itself has an unpleasant smell, the ice may simply be carrying that odor into your glass.

Work through these checks before assuming there is a plumbing problem:

  1. Discard the existing ice. Do not use it for drinks, food storage, or testing whether the problem has resolved.
  2. Inspect the refrigerator and freezer for odor sources. Check for spoiled or expired food and remove it.
  3. Seal strong-smelling foods. Keep odor-heavy items covered or in well-sealed containers.
  4. Check the ice bin or removable tray. A bin that smells off can transfer that smell to fresh ice.
  5. Make a small amount of fresh ice after removing the odor source. If it is neutral-smelling, the issue was likely confined to stored ice or freezer air.

This path makes sense when the smell is confined to ice or the freezer compartment. It does not establish that dishwasher fumes or detergent have migrated into the ice maker.

New water filter A newly installed filter can cause an odd taste if the unit has not been primed and purged. One refrigerator guide specifies discarding 3--5 tall drinking glasses of dispenser water after filter installation.
New plumbing or water-line work Air in new plumbing can lead to 2 or 3 empty ice-maker cycles and may coincide with discolored or odd-flavored ice. Follow the appliance's priming instructions.
New dishwasher installation or nearby plumbing work If the water itself changed after the work, request an inspection rather than assuming the refrigerator needs cleaning. A detergent-like odor alone does not identify the source.

The stated quantities above apply only to the specific new-installation or new-filter situations described. They are not universal discard amounts for every odor problem.

Clean the Ice Bin and Maker by the Manual

A safe manual-first sequence is:

  1. Turn off or pause ice production if your model instructs you to do so.
  2. Empty and discard the stored ice.
  3. Remove only the parts the manual says are removable.
  4. Clean those parts with the cleaner, water temperature, and method approved for your appliance.
  5. Rinse, dry, and reinstall components as directed.
  6. Restart ice production.
  7. Discard the number of fresh batches specified by the manufacturer before retesting the ice.

One manufacturer's procedure calls for hand-washing removable ice-maker parts with warm water and mild soap rather than putting them in a dishwasher. Likewise, some manufacturers direct users to discard the first 2--3 batches of ice after cleaning. Treat that as model-specific cleaning guidance, not proof that a persistent chemical odor has been resolved.

Do not improvise with cleaning chemicals

Do not run vinegar, bleach, descaler, or another household cleaner through an ice maker or refrigerator water path unless your model manual explicitly permits that product and procedure.

  • Vinegar: Use it only if the manual approves it for your specific appliance.
  • Bleach: Do not use it unless the manufacturer specifically authorizes the concentration and method.
  • Never mix cleaners. In particular, never combine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acids, or any other cleaner or disinfectant. The CDC's bleach-cleaning safety guidance warns that mixing products can release dangerous vapors.

"Natural" or common household ingredients are not automatically suitable for an appliance's internal components.

Prevent the Smell From Returning

Once fresh ice is neutral-smelling, prevention is mostly about keeping odor sources away from stored ice and following the appliance's maintenance instructions.

  • Keep freezer foods covered, especially strong-smelling items.
  • Do not leave ice in the bin indefinitely; discard stale ice before it affects new batches.
  • Clean the bin, tray, and ice maker on the schedule in your manual. One manufacturer suggests cleaning an ice maker about every six months, with more frequent cleaning potentially needed for heavy use, but intervals vary by model, use, and water conditions.
  • Replace the refrigerator water filter on the manufacturer's schedule.
  • After replacing a filter, complete the model's required priming or purging steps.

An overdue filter is worth checking when ice quality changes, but a detergent-like smell by itself does not prove the filter is the cause.

When to Move Beyond Cleaning

Do not keep repeating cleaning cycles if the symptom points beyond the freezer.

Seek appliance or plumbing help when you notice any of the following:

  • The chemical or detergent-like smell is present in both ice and dispensed water.
  • The odor persists after removing freezer odor sources, cleaning according to the manual, and discarding the required fresh batches.
  • The smell began after water-line, plumbing, or nearby appliance work and affects the water itself.
  • You see unexplained residue in the bin, around the ice maker, or in dispensed water.
  • You use a private well and have a specific reason to suspect contamination. If fresh ice is odor-free after you remove freezer odor sources and complete the approved cleaning process, resume normal use. If the smell returns, inspect or replace the applicable filter according to the manual and use the manufacturer's support guidance. If both ice and water smell chemical- or detergent-like, stop using them and contact qualified appliance or plumbing service---or the local water provider---before treating it as an ice-maker cleaning issue.
