Install an ice maker in a closed bar cabinet only when the exact model's official instructions approve that enclosure and its required intake, exhaust, clearances, and service access remain unobstructed. A sealed cabinet is not acceptable where airflow is required, and cabinet grilles or fans do not turn an unapproved freestanding or rear- or side-vented unit into a built-in model.
The cabinet should be designed around the ice maker---not the other way around. Before cutting a vent opening, identify the model number and find the installation manual for your model to confirm how that specific machine is intended to be installed.
First, decide whether the cabinet installation is allowed

"Ice maker" is not a single installation category. Ventilation clearance varies by model and condenser type, and air-cooled machines need open intake and exhaust space. That means a universal clearance, vent-hole size, or fan recommendation is not reliable.

A product description that says an appliance is suitable for "under-counter" use is useful context, but compare the product specifications with the manual: it is not a substitute for model-specific installation instructions. For example, a placement description may identify a machine as suitable for under-counter built-in or freestanding use without providing its clearance dimensions, airflow route, or cabinet-vent requirements.
A simple go/no-go test
Continue planning the cabinet if:
- The manual approves the intended enclosure or installation type.
- You can preserve the factory-required intake and exhaust path.
- Required clearances will remain open after trim, doors, panels, and utility lines are installed.
- The unit can still be cleaned, connected, and removed for service.
Stop and change the plan if:
- The manual requires open side or rear space that the cabinet cannot provide.
- The intake or exhaust location is unknown.
- The cabinet would trap discharged heat around the machine.

Build one continuous airflow path

There are two related---but different---ventilation jobs:

The cabinet cannot replace or override the appliance's designed ventilation. It must support it.
A workable layout gives room-temperature cabinet air a path to the model's intake, lets the machine discharge warm air, and gives that warm air a route out of the cabinet without looping back to the intake.

Placement rules that apply to the cabinet design
- Put a cabinet opening only where it supports the model's documented airflow path.
- Keep factory vents, louvers, and grilles fully open; do not cover, reduce, relocate, or modify them.
- Maintain the manual-required clearance at the relevant side, rear, top, or front.
- Keep cabinet framing, decorative trim, stored bottles, cleaning supplies, and loose hoses out of the air path.
- Separate incoming cabinet air from hot discharge air as much as the approved layout requires, so the machine does not repeatedly draw in its own warmed exhaust.
- Avoid treating the cabinet door gap as a planned ventilation system unless the manufacturer specifically permits that arrangement.
A cabinet with two attractive grilles is not automatically ventilated. If both openings feed the same small trapped space, or if warm exhaust immediately returns to the intake, the airflow path is still compromised. Inadequate airflow, unsuitable room conditions, water-supply problems, or drainage problems can keep an ice maker from reaching its intended performance.
Do you need passive grilles, a fan, or both?

The ice maker should connect to a dedicated grounded outlet. Do not use adapters or extension cords.

- Choose cabinet surfaces that can be wiped and inspected.

- The cabinet provides one continuous airflow route without hot-air recirculation.
- Any cabinet grille or auxiliary fan supports, rather than changes, the approved airflow path.
- Water shutoff, drain routing, electrical connection, and service points remain accessible.
- The drain type matches the planned plumbing arrangement.
- The unit uses the required grounded electrical connection without adapters or extension cords.
- Cleaning panels, filters, and the appliance itself can be accessed or removed as required.
- The installation follows the manufacturer's instructions and applicable local plumbing, electrical, health, and building requirements.
If you cannot verify any of those conditions, do not close the cabinet around the ice maker. Keep it in an approved open location or select a model documented for the installation you want.
