That distinction matters because chilling and dilution happen together. The meltwater becomes part of the drink. A colder cube may slightly affect the early stage, but it does not eliminate dilution once the ice begins melting.

For most home drink making, focus first on these variables:

  1. Enough ice: A sparse handful of ice has less cooling capacity than a well-filled glass of intact ice. Apparent volume can be misleading; the amount of actual ice matters.
  2. Ice surface area: Smaller pieces expose more area to the liquid, speeding both chilling and dilution.

So, freezer-cold ice is helpful, but it is rarely the main lever. A full glass of dry, intact ice in a chilled glass will usually matter more than chasing an unusually low freezer setting.

Treat Freezer Odor as a Flavor Problem
