A hot drink served without ice is unaffected by the cubes in your freezer. No ice contact means no melting, dilution, water flavor, or freezer odor can enter the glass.

Ice becomes relevant when you intentionally use it to change a drink's temperature. Once ice meets liquid warmer than 0°C, it absorbs heat as it melts and adds water to the liquid. That can be useful if a drink is uncomfortably hot, but it changes two things at once: temperature and concentration.

Shaking with ice generally dilutes faster and adds air and texture. Stirring generally dilutes more slowly and preserves clarity. Those are useful distinctions for cold cocktails, but they do not establish that chilling ingredients with ice and then reheating them makes a warm cocktail better.

If you are making a hot serve, skip the pre-chill unless the recipe gives you a specific reason to do it. Otherwise, you are adding a cooling-and-dilution step only to reverse the cooling later.

The Ice Quality That Can Affect Flavor

For households that use ice in cold cocktails, spirit tasting, or occasional cooling, flavor is a more useful concern than visual perfection.

Ice can carry water-derived flavors into a drink as it melts. If your tap water has a noticeable mineral, chlorine, or other off taste, that character may become apparent in the meltwater.
